Make Room for Yourself: 5 Lovely Ways to Enjoy a Little Me-Time

Make Room for Yourself: 5 lovely ways to enjoy a little me-time.

There’s a particular kind of busy that fills a whole day without leaving much of it for you. You answer the messages, do the errands, think about dinner, and remember the thing someone else needs. Then an unexpected half-hour appears, and you spend most of it wondering what to do with it.

A little time to yourself can feel surprisingly unfamiliar when you’re used to being available. Perhaps you reach for your phone, start another chore, or decide you’ll relax once everything is finished. But there’s room for something you enjoy in an ordinary, unfinished day, too. This week, let’s make that time easier to recognise, and a little lovelier to spend.

1. Choose what you’re actually in the mood for

The idea of me-time can come with a very specific picture: a bath, candles, a journal, and a perfectly quiet house. Lovely if that sounds like your evening. On another day, you might prefer a favourite playlist, a funny film, or ten minutes sitting outside with something cold to drink.

Before filling your free time, ask yourself what sounds appealing right now. Would you enjoy some company, a change of scene, something creative, or a little quiet? Your answer can be ordinary and it can change. You don’t have to spend your precious spare time doing something just because it looks relaxing in a photograph.

2. Make a small date with yourself

Think of something you keep saying you’d love to do, then choose a version that fits the week you’re having. An afternoon browsing bookshops might become a short stop at one on your way home. A leisurely breakfast out could become coffee at your own table with a chapter of your book before the day gets going.

Give your little plan a time and a place. “I’ll read on the balcony after lunch on Saturday” is easier to follow than “I should make more time for myself.” If other people share your space, tell them when you’ll be taking that time and arrange any practical help you need. Even a modest plan deserves a fair chance to happen.

3. Enjoy the lovely things you already have

There might be a favourite cup at the back of your cupboard, earrings you save for an occasion, or a dress you keep passing over because the day feels too ordinary. Bring one of those things into the week. Wear the earrings to lunch, make your tea in the pretty cup, or put on the dress for a stroll somewhere you enjoy.

Let the pleasure be in using it. There’s no need to buy a whole new set of things or arrange your home before you can enjoy one small detail. A familiar playlist and freshly washed pyjamas can be enough for a lovely evening. Choose something that makes you think, “Oh, I do love this,” and give yourself a chance to enjoy it.

4. Leave a little space around your screen

Sometimes you sit down to watch one thing and look up much later, having barely noticed what you’ve seen. If that sounds familiar, try choosing what you want from your next break before you open an app. You might decide to watch an episode you’ve been looking forward to, call a friend, or spend a few minutes looking for inspiration for a hobby.

For an activity you’d like to give more attention to, put your phone somewhere slightly out of reach. Read a few pages with both hands on the book, listen to the whole song, or finish your tea while it’s still warm. Keep your phone available if you need it; the idea is simply to make a little room for the thing you chose.

5. Let enjoyment be enough

It’s easy to turn a hobby into another assignment. You start drawing and wonder if you should post it. You take a walk and feel tempted to measure it. You pick up a novel and think about how quickly you ought to finish. If that extra layer is taking the pleasure out of it, try leaving it aside for a while.

Bake something familiar, doodle on scrap paper, revisit a favourite film, or take photographs that stay in your camera roll. You’re allowed to be a beginner, repeat yourself, and do something simply because you like doing it. An enjoyable half-hour doesn’t need a finished result to be worth having.

What would feel lovely this week?

Look at the days ahead and choose one small pocket of time you can reasonably make your own. Decide what you’d like to do, gather anything you need, and keep the plan easy enough to begin. If your week changes, move it somewhere that works rather than trying to squeeze it into an impossible day.

You may get a whole afternoon, or just the quiet stretch between one responsibility and the next. Either way, it can hold something you enjoy. So here’s a little invitation for this week: bring out the favourite cup, open the book, play the song—and let yourself be there for it.
